Died Japan, 1856

From a family of astronomers to the shogun, Kagesuke Shibukawa was a bridge between traditional Japanese and western astronomy. He translated works of Joseph-Jérôme Lalande as Shinko Rekisho in 1836. Less than 10 years later his version of the calendar, based on post-Keplerian astronomy, was in official use.
