Introduction

Time-delay are important components of many systems from engineering, economics, and the life sciences, due to the fact that the transfer of material, energy, and information is mostly not instantaneous. They appear, for instance, as computation and communication lags, they model transport phenomena and heredity, and they arise as feedback delays in control loops. An overview of applications, ranging from traffic flow control and lasers with phase-conjugate feedback, over (bio)chemical reactors and cancer modeling, to control of communication networks and control via networks, is included in Sipahi et al. (2011).

The presence of time-delay in dynamical systems may induce complex behavior, and this behavior is not always intuitive. Even if a system’s equation is scalar, oscillations may occur.
