Historical Background

Considerable research and study has been dedicated to understanding emotional processing in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Differences in emotion recognition and emotional responsiveness are commonly noted in clinical presentations (Begeer et al. 2008). As a result, considerable attention has also been dedicated to better understand emotional processing in the research literature. Historically, these investigations focused on social stimuli such as viewing emotional faces. Results from multiple meta-analyses indicate that, despite considerable heterogeneity, overall impairments in facial emotion recognition exist and cannot be completely accounted for by intellectual ability of people with ASD (Lozier et al. 2014; Uljarevic and Hamilton 2013).
