Historical Background

The Krüppel-like factor (KLF) family is a subclass of zinc-finger containing DNA-binding transcription factors. There are currently 17 known KLF family members in mammals. The unique feature of the KLF family members is the presence of three highly conserved cysteine2/histidine2 (C2H2)-type zinc fingers at the carboxyl terminus of the protein, while other regions are highly divergent to carry out their individual functions (Fig. 1). KLF4 is one of the most attractive factors in the KLF family members, because it is implicated in multiple important processes including cellular proliferation, differentiation, and the establishment of pluripotency.
