The IBM 2010 Global CEO Study, Capitalising on Complexity (IBM 2010), makes an explicit connection between complexity and creativity with these findings:

  • The world’s private and public sector leaders believe that a rapid escalation of “complexity” is the biggest challenge confronting them. They expect it to continue and to accelerate in the coming years

  • The study participants identify “creativity” as the single most important leadership competency for enterprises seeking a path through this complexity.

The connection and importance of the complexity and creativity connection is further advanced by The Future of Jobs, a report by the World Economic Forum (2016) that looks at employment, skills, and workforce strategy. This report states that the top three workplace abilities in 2020 will be:

    Critical thinking

    Creativity
