Definition
Location management in a personal communication service (PCS) network environment deals with the problem of tracking mobile users. A cellular wireless service area is composed of a collection of cells, each serviced by a base station (BS). A number of base stations are wired to a mobile switching center (MSC). The backbone of a PCS network consists of all these BSs, MSCs, and the existing wired network (such as PSTN, ISDN, etc.) between them. This MSC acts as a gateway for the base stations.
In order to route an incoming call to a PCS user, his (or her) whereabouts in the cellular network need to be determined within a fixed time, which may be specified as a QoS (Quality of Service).
