Definition

Broad linear to sinuous–crescent-shaped transverse dune.

Category

A type of transverse dunes (category)

Synonyms

Barchan chain; Barchanoid dune; Crescentic ridge; Sinuous transverse dune

Description

Asymmetrical wavy dune ridge consisting of parallel rows of coalesced barchans (connected crescents) in plan view. It is oriented transverse to the predominant wind direction and migrates forward. It has gently dipping windward slopes and steeply dipping (32–34°) leeward slopes. Barchanoid ridges are typically separated by open, inter-dune corridors. Inter-dune depressions between closely spaced barchanoid ridges are termed fulje (Glenn 1979).

Their individual segments show greater curvature than the very slightly curved transverse ridges (Breed and Grow 1979; Thomas 1989, p. 248 and references therein). They show curving strata in cross sections parallel to the crest, in contrast to transverse ridges that have largely horizontal strata.

Barchanoid ridges display two alternating...
