Abstract

George Amiroutzes was a Byzantine philosopher, theologian, and writer. During his lifetime he was considered the intellectual equal of Georgios Gemistos (Plethon) and Georgios (Gennadios) Scholarios. A native of Trebizond, he attended the Council of Ferrara/Florence in 1438/1439, where he supported the Unionist views. He led a diplomatic mission to Genoa in 1447 and held the title of protovestiarios and possibly of megas logothetes. After the fall of Trebizond in 1461, he was taken captive to Constantinople and, later, Adrianople but was soon invited by Mehmed II to stay at his court, where he continued his scholarly activity. His philosophical views can be reconstructed mainly on the basis of a short text preserved in cod. Plut. 87.17 in the Biblioteca Laurenziana in Florence and 15 philosophical treatises in Cod.96-37 (ff. 1r-90r) in the Archivo y Biblioteca Capitulares (Toledo). The short text in the Florentine manuscript refutes the view that Aristotle believed in a single common intellect for all men. The treatises preserved in the Toledo manuscript most probably reflect his activity as a teacher and do not constitute a comprehensive whole. One of the major themes running through them is the attempt to refute Platonic philosophy. Most importantly, these treatises reveal the profound influence of Thomas Aquinas on A.
