Definition

Honor is defined as a person’s worth in his/her own and others’ eyes (Rodriguez Mosquera et al. 2010). This set of socially accepted norms further highlights the significance of a person’s reputation and social image (Rodriguez Mosquera et al. 2008).

Social and Cultural Underpinnings of Honor Code

According to Pitt-Rivers (2001), honor, simultaneously, is a person’s self-reflection and representation of their moral values in the social setting. Consequently, honor is a cohesive measure for determining social identity, which exists in one’s interpersonal relationships established in the society. They further added that honor code applicable in a culture regulates individuals by guiding their moral evaluation and judgment of others, influencing people’s actions before society, and measuring of social status (Pitt-Rivers 2003).
