Robert Hinde (October 26, 1923–December 23, 2016) was a British behavioral biologist who studied the behavioral development and social relationships of birds, monkeys, and humans. He was the primary influence on a generation of behavioral biologists.
From 1940 to 1945, during World War II, Hinde was in the Royal Air Force, an experience that contributed to a lifelong disdain for war and concern to promote an ethos of peace. In 1948 he obtained a 1st class BA in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, as well as a B.Sc. from the University of London. From 1948 to 1950, he conducted research for his D. Phil. in zoology at the University of Oxford, where he worked as a research assistant at the Edward Grey Institute, was advised by the ornithologist David Lack, and was influenced by the ethologist Niko Tinbergen.
