John David Mayer is professor of psychology at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, New Hampshire, USA. His research interests are focused on the study of intelligences that concern reasoning about emotions and about personality, termed emotional intelligence and personal intelligence, respectively. He also has developed a model for representing personality called the personality systems framework.
Early Life and Educational Background
Mayer was born in 1953 in New York City to Edna and Arthur C. Mayer. His family then moved 27 miles north to Ardsley, NY, where he attended the Ardsley public school system. He went on to receive a B.A. at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with majors in both Creative Writing and Literature, and in Drama. He worked as a video scriptwriter for 2 years, researching the careers of managers and dramatizing their work lives under the supervision of J.
