Introduction

Willibald Ruch is a professor for psychology at the University of Zürich, Switzerland. He conducts research in the domain of personality and assessment with an emphasis on personality structure and development, temperament research, assessment of positive psychology traits (character strength and virtues, humor and cheerfulness), facial expression and nonverbal behavior, as well as assessment of the fear of being laughed at.

Early Life and Educational Background

Ruch was born on July 22, 1956, in Kühnsdorf, Austria. With a background as a high school teacher for classical guitar, Ruch earned his Ph.D. in 1980 in Psychology and Education at the University of Graz, Austria. His thesis was on the topic of “common structures in humor appreciation and personality” at the School of Natural Sciences, Karl-Franzens-University Graz, Austria.
