Synovial osteochondromatosis

Definition

An uncommon benign neoplasm characterized by formation of multiple nodules of hyaline cartilage, typically present in the subsynovial connective tissue of joints, tendons, and bursae (Sciot and Bridge 2013).

Clinical Features

  • Incidence

    This neoplasm is rare without detailed data reported in literature about the incidence or the prevalence.

  • Age

    Synovial chondromatosis affects patients with a wide range from childhood to late adult life with a peak incidence in the fifth decade of life.

  • Sex

    Males are affected twice as often as females, with a ratio of 1.8:1.

  • Site

    It occurs usually in large joints, such as the knee, hip, elbow, or shoulder joint with the formation of small, metaplastic cartilaginous or osseocartilaginous nodules of varying size attached to the synovial membrane of the joint, tendon sheath, or lining the adjacent extra-articular bursa (Sciot and Bridge 2013; Folpe and Inwards 2010).
