Training in Bowen Theory and Psychotherapy

Introduction

The principal organization engaged in the training of professionals in Bowen family systems theory and its application is The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family in Washington, DC. The founder of the center, Murray Bowen, M.D., a clinical professor and director of the family program in the Department of Psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical Center, began teaching and supervising residents in 1960. When a growing number of mental health professionals showed interest in learning more about his ideas, he began a postgraduate training program in 1969, taught by the faculty he had trained. An additional training program for individuals living outside of the Washington, DC area was added in 1975. The Georgetown Family Center was established that year and moved off campus.

After Dr. Bowen’s death in 1990, the name of the center was changed to The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family. The center continues to...
