Michel Foucault

It has not been to analyze the phenomena of power nor to elaborate the foundations of such an analysis. My objective, instead, has been to create a history of the different modes by which, in our culture, human beings are made subjects (Foucault 1983).

Introduction

Michel Foucault (1926–1984) was a French philosopher and historian, whose work affected significantly contemporary humanities and social sciences, particularly in the areas of health and illness, deviance, gender and sexuality, organizational theory, and social institutions. His work connects history and philosophy in a novel way that resulted in an important critique of modernity. Foucault’s studies on madness, sexuality, punishment, human sciences, and techniques of the self show historical contingency and casual character of such knowledge and practice.
