Definition
This essay begins with an introduction on the relationship between racism and imperialism. The second section tackles the importance of ideology, using the examples of the British Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Nazi Empire and the Soviet Union, the case studies utilized throughout this contribution. The third section examines the practice of racism within these entities, i.e. the ways in which ethnic and racial hierarchies operated, which, in the case of the short-lived Nazi empire, meant genocide. The final substantive section tackles the rise of racism and intolerance as a result of imperial collapse in which new nationalisms can lead to genocide and ethnic cleansing. The conclusion emphasizes the multifaceted links between racism and imperialism.
