Definition

Informal settlements are residential areas developed without abiding to specific and relevant formal rules. They are areas where housing development has taken place on land which the occupants have no legal claim to (Collier et al. 2018).

Since informal settlement dwellers suffer more spatial, social, and economic exclusion from the benefits and opportunities of the broader urban environment, reducing informal settlements is considered an appropriate initiative for improving inclusivity and attaining sustainable communities. In this entry, reducing informal settlements implies improving the living condition of such settlements, so that they transform into sustainable communities.
