Abstract

Significant uranium deposits occur in the central Ukrainian Precambrian Shield between the lower courses of the Bug and Dnieper (Dnepr) Rivers in south-central Ukraine. Major deposits are of alkali-metasomatite-type and situated in the Kirovograd-Smolino and Krivoy Rog (Kryvy Rig in Ukrainian) regions. Minor intrusive/pegmatite-, quartz-pebble conglomerate-, and vein-type deposits also occur in the shield. Uranium occurrences associated with the Neoproterozoic (Riphean) unconformity are identified within the western slope of the Ukrainian Shield. Sandstone-type deposits are reported from the Dnieper (Dnepr) Basin, where it overlaps the uraniferous crystal-line region, and from the Donets Basin and Dnieperovsko-Donetskaya (Dnieper- Donets) Depression in eastern Ukraine (Fig. 19.1).

Notes

  1. 1.

Spelling of localities and stratigraphic units may not always be accurate due to variable transcription from Cyrillic into Latin from Russian and Ukrainian text. Dimensions of deposits, ore bodies, etc. are rare in many published papers or are not always clear and do not match each other in different publications. Therefore any dimensions given in text and figures should be taken cautiously and may have to be verified.

  2. 2.

The thermal plume assumption may find support by Starostenko’s et al. (2010a,b) results of seismic surveys, although not so much by an intrusion but by a remarkable discrepancy in the crustal-mantle relationship in the Kirovograd-Smolino region as discussed earlier and shown in Fig. 19.4.

  3. 3.

Centralnoye is referred to as “the Northern Flank of the Michurinsk ore field” by Bakarzhiyev et al. 1995b.

  4. 4.

In Belevtsev et al.’s 1995 publication, Novokonstantinovskoye is referred to as “the northern sector of the Far Eastern Flank of the Vatutinskoye deposit”.
