Definition
A spindle is a rotating shaft with a fixture for holding a tool (in the case of a milling, grinding, or drilling spindle) or a workpiece (in the case of a turning spindle). The spindle shaft serves as a support, a positioner, and a rotary drive for the tool or workpiece.
Theory and Application
Spindle Types and Applications
The spindle shaft must take up any machining forces arising during cutting with the lowest possible deformation response, generate/transmit the cutting power provided by an internal or external drive for machining, and exhibit high positioning and running accuracy. In machine tools, various types of main spindles are used to satisfy different requirements. Turning and grinding spindles must achieve extremely high concentricity at a high stiffness and usually medium speeds, whereas milling and drilling spindles are used at (in part) high speeds...
