Synonym: Stratification
Bedding is used to illustrate the phenomenon of layer formation due to differences in the composition, colour, particle size, shape and structure of materials. Bedding is common in most sedimentary rocks and some volcanic rocks, and it is an important marker for the formation of sedimentary rocks and some volcaniclastic rocks. Beds can be from several centimetres to several metres thick, and their lateral extent can range from several centimetres to thousands of metres. Based on the morphology of small beds and the interfaces between the bedding systems, bedding can be divided into three basic types: horizontal bedding, wavy bedding and cross-bedding. Based on the morphology of small beds and the bedding system and the cause of formation, bedding can be categorized as planar bedding, wedge-shaped bedding and trough bedding.
