Beihai Weizhou Island Volcano National Geopark, Guangxi

Located in Beihai City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Weizhou Island is one of the largest islands in the Beibu Gulf and one of the youngest volcanic islands in China. It is 21 nautical miles from Beihai City and has a total area of approximately 27.70 km² (including Xieyang Island). It became a national geopark in 2004. The geopark has typical volcanic structures (including craters) and a rich volcanic landscape that records a large variety of volcanic activities. Weizhou Island is also the largest volcanic island in China, and it is nearly circular. Numerous volcanic eruptions occurred from 130,000 to 10,000 years ago, forming the Nanwan, Hengluo Mountain, Crocodile Mountain, Xiyang Village and Xiyang Island Powan Craters. Marine and coastal erosion have shaped the current attractive volcanic landscape.
