This geopark is located in the Mount Wudangshan Tourism Economic Zone, Shiyan City, Hubei Province. It covers an area of 312 km2, and it was designated as one of the fifth group of national geoparks by the Ministry of Land and Resources in August 2009. Situated in the central part of the orogenic belt in the southern Qinling Mountains, Mount Wudangshan is part of a thrust system with global significance. Mount Wudangshan features various rock types, large lithological variations and a long period of formation (0.8–1.8 billion years ago). Basic dykes from the Jinningian Era are widely scattered, representing a rifting environment. The Laohekou-Baihe fracture zone is one of the most important secondary structural boundary faults in the orogenic belt. The unique rock associations at Mount Wudangshan and the sculptures that developed due to neotectonic movements constitute the unique metamorphic Fengcong landforms in the geopark.
