Ordos Platform

This platform is a part of the North China Platform. It is located between the Qinling Mountains and the Daqingshan Mountains in Inner Mongolia. The Helan Mountains-Liupan Mountains are located to the west, and the Huanghe (Yellow River) forms the eastern boundary. The North Shaanxi Loess Plateau is located to the south. Mesozoic and Palaeozoic strata with shallow dips are common in the river valley. The Mu Us Desert is located north of the platform and contains outcrops of ancient metamorphic rocks. Gradual uplift and subsidence were common, and the deformation of the overlying strata is weak. These characteristics are typical of a platform. During the Mesozoic Era, the region was a large inland basin with nearly horizontal bedding. In the Cenozoic, the area was covered by large amounts of loess, forming the famous Loess Plateau, where the Luochuan Loess National Geopark was established.
