This is a cave landscape consisting of marine caves that form near sea level and are deeper (towards land) than their width (parallel to the shoreline). Cave formation is controlled by the direction of seawater erosion, the homogeneity of the rock and the joint patterns. Caves are usually located at the base of the sea cliff or wave-cut platform. Sea caves of various heights can be found in the bedrock along the northern coasts of China. They are an important indicator of coastal uplift (Fig. 15).
