This was one of the major international environmental conventions within the framework of Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in the United Nations. Its full name is ‘United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa’. The convention was adopted at the Diplomatic Conference in Paris, France, on 17 June 1994 and went into force on 26 December 1996. The objective of the convention is to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought in countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification, particularly in Africa.
