This landscape is composed of cliffs and corridors in the nearly horizontal layers of sandstone interbedded with argillaceous rocks. Variations in rock hardness can cause differential weathering, and soft argillaceous rock layers can be deeply eroded, forming a concave corridor that is called a cliff corridor or horizontal rock depression. With slight modification, a cliff corridor can serve as a walkway. The ancient boardwalk in northwestern Sichuan Province was built along a cliff corridor, and these corridors are often good candidates for popular tourist spots (Fig. 32).
